KARMICHAEL
HUNT & TOM HAWKINS KICK GOALS AFTER THE SIREN, THE 2012 AFL SEASON
In the world of AFL football, there are few more exciting moments
than the match-winning goal after the siren. In 2012, AFL fans with access to
Foxtel were granted the privilege of being able to watch all 9 games each round
live, and so for the first time it
was always possible to see the really special moments as they happened. I was lucky enough to see two after-the-siren match-winners in 2012 that happened in
completely different circumstances.
Karmichael Hunt’s goal capped a mostly dreadful game between two also-rans in which Richmond played what Paul Roos called ‘the worst
two minutes of football ever’. Tom Hawkins, on the other hand, put the finishing
touch on another in the long line of classics between perennial finalists
Geelong and Hawthorn. Hunt’s was a relatively simple shot; Hawkins’ was a
beyond-the-50 monster. Hunt's happened in front of 10 thousand fans in Cairns. Hawkins slotted his in front of 65 thousand at the MCG. But look at these two videos and see if you can pick a difference in the levels of jubilation. That's the magic of sport right there.
Perhaps these two goals are particularly special to me because
both players were in my draft fantasy league, which always leads fans to
develop an attachment to certain guys, but I think it’s more likely that both
players have been so maligned in the past that to see them stand up and kick
goals their teams so desperately needed just lent the moments that extra level
of excitement.
Honourable Mention: This amazing run from Lewis Jetta is just spectacular.
