ANNE
HATHAWAY
Anne Hathaway is one of those actresses
that can elicit surprisingly vitriolic reactions from certain people – similar
to the kind of reaction you used to get when you mentioned Andie MacDowell in
polite conversation. I don’t understand it at all. In my mind, Anne Hathaway is
one of the best young actresses working in Hollywood, as spectacularly
versatile as she is talented. You can sigh whenever her name comes up as much
as you like, she’ll keep proving you wrong with bravura performances in film
after film.
After a turbulent 2011 (the disastrous
Oscar hosting stint, the wavering English accent in One Day) in which she gave
the haters plenty of ammo, Anne Hathaway nailed two famous roles in 2012. First
up, she was one of many highlights as a sultry, witty Catwoman in The Dark
Knight Rises, and she followed that with my favourite female performance of the
year as Fantine in Les Miserables. She was the cast MVP of her own hosting
stint Saturday Night Live and a
delightful presence on every single tonight show that she appeared on.
Honourable
Mention: Amy Adams just doesn’t put in a bad
performance, even if she’s occasionally in a bad movie. She was in Trouble with the Curve this year, which
is not a particularly good movie, but she and Justin Timberlake are by far the
best things about it. Before that, she was in The Master and The Muppets. Enough
said.
