CRAIG EMERSON SINGS 'NO WHYALLA WIPEOUT'
This is one of the major reasons I'm so glad the Internet exists. When Craig Emerson started singing 'No Whyalla Wipeout' to the tune of 'Horror Movie' by Skyhooks, it went mad on Twitter and spread like wildfire via social networking and news organisations. The event occurred and within an hour I was able to watch it over and over again. It's now five months later, I've watched the video dozens of times and it never loses its power to evoke fascination, horror and hilarity within me. It lasts 50 seconds (jump to 1:20), and yet at the end of it I have so many questions.
1. First of all, why Horror Movie? To someone who actually writes song parodies semi-professionally, it is a completely baffling choice. Is it just because it has the 'right there on my TV' lyric? Is he comparing the Whyalla situation to a horror movie? Is this the only song he has ever heard before in his entire life?
2. What kind of man believes in even his wildest dreams that this plays well with the Australian public? Apparently a member of his media team was playing the backing track on his iPad. Who are these people, and how did they get their jobs? What are they being paid?
3. Are the ten seconds of Emerson waiting for the backing track to kick in the most awkward ten seconds in human history?
4. Are the ten seconds of him dancing even worse?
5. What is going through the journalist's head when all this is happening? Is it the most disappointing thing in the world that no one was filming his face as he watched it go down?
6. Why have I watched this dozens of times?
Honourable Mention: Texas Governor Rick Perry was the classic candidate who looked great on paper but was terrible in reality. Here is his crowning moment, where he completely forgets what he's talking about:
