Serialisation can be
an interesting beast, especially when it comes to comic books. I normally
struggle with television shows or comic books without at least an element of
serialisation to keep me coming back, week after week. Which is why the fact
that I love Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye as
much as I do is such a remarkable achievement. Fraction doesn’t need plot
twists or over-the-top villains with convoluted schemes to keep us coming back
week after week – he’s created two outstanding lead characters that do the job
for him.

COMIC BOOK OF THE WEEK: BATMAN #16 REVIEW
Scott Snyder has been on some kind of run
ever since he took on DC’s flagship Batman
title back in 2011. First, he gave us the inspired Court of the Owls/Night
of the Owls storylines, which traded in stunning atmospherics and an inspired
revelation. Now, he’s giving us a Joker story every bit as demented and twisted
as it is steeped in comic book lore. That shows no signs of abating in this,
the terrifying, thrilling penultimate installment of Death of the Family.
THE REST OF THIS REVIEW CONTAINS FULL SPOILERS FOR BATMAN #16:

My 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2013
15.
THE WOLVERINE
The
Wolverine is based on the character’s most famous
comic book storyline of all time. On one hand, this is a good thing: the source
material is the best opportunity yet for a truly great movie featuring an
X-Man. On the other hand, it also means that if this doesn’t work, we can all
pack up and go home as far as X-Men solo projects are concerned. Some of the directors that danced around this are promising
(Darren Aronofsky), the project eventually landing on James Mangold (Walk the
Line, 3:10 to Yuma, uh, Kate and Leopold) and Hugh Jackman is always fantastic
as this character, no matter the movie, so let’s hope they’ve finally given him
a film worthy of his performances.

Simon & Andrew's Best TV of 2012
Where did Homeland finish on Simon and Andrew's respective lists? |
*My list is slightly different to the one in the podcast due to some oversights and technicalities (I had forgotten Luther S2 aired in 2011). I also cheated in positions 29 & 30 by adding two Australian shows. Otherwise, it's mostly the same.
