Top 10 Films of 2012

10. KILLING THEM SOFTLY

Andrew Dominik continues his streak of brilliant, under-appreciated films with this deeply angry, bitter evisceration of the American way, backed up by outstanding performances from Brad Pitt, James Gandolfini and Ben Mendelsohn. It's never subtle, but it's a film that will only grow in your estimation the more time you have to think about it. And you will be thinking about it. Fascinatingly, it received an CinemaScore of 'F' from American film-goers (the lowest possible), suggesting that maybe Dominik is scratching at a wound nobody wants exposed.

2012 ENTERTAINMENT HIGHLIGHTS: NO. 1

(Each day in December, I’m going to be posting small tributes to my 2012 entertainment highlights. Not all of them will have been created exclusively in 2012, but they’ve all been special to me this year for one reason or another. I do this not for any particular reason, but just because, as a pop-culture junkie, I’m incredibly lucky to have been able to consume all of this entertainment this year, and it’s nice to have some positivity on the Internet every now and again.)

THE 2012 ACADEMY AWARDS NOMINATIONS PREDICTION GAME

Much like the American presidential elections or the Miss Universe pageant, I follow the Academy Awards race not because I care who wins, but because the getting there is so much fun to watch. 2012 holds some vestige of promise – unlike last year, there isn’t yet one definite winner. (In retrospect, it was always going to be The King’s Speech last year, as much as one might have wished for a The Social Network upset.) Annually, I submit myself to the fool’s errand of trying to pick the nominees – so here we go again.

This year, I humbly submit a play-along-at-home game. It works like this. Write down your 10 possible nominees for the main categories in order of likelihood. Your top choice receives 10 points, second 9, third 8, etc. For every nomination you get correct, you get that many points. Total ‘em up at the end and see if you can beat my score! (Spoiler alert: You probably can.)
